The Green Chair III

This is the first "Green Chair" series painting that is in Gouache. I am doing another in this medium and have just about decided to do the rest of the series in Gouache on paper. I like the abstract images that seem easier for me to achieve in this particular kind of painting.

Oscar is our pet conjure parrot. He is a lively addition to our household and this is one of his favorite perches. I sometimes wonder if he is drawn by the colors or feels secure camouflaged by the painting

Enhanced Sketches

There is always something in a quick gesture sketch that I never quite capture 100% when I use one as a source for a painting. Since I usually do them on newsprint, they are not archival, or suitable for framing. One day when I was making prints of original artwork, I shot some of the news print sketches and used photoshop to enhance the backgrounds to make them look old and yellowed. Printed on Fine Art Paper, matted and framed they make a stunning grouping and can be whatever size best fits the wall or decor.

I know I said I was going to migrate to my website for blogging. Then a couple of days later, the website crashed. Maybe it was an omen. Anyway, I am back to "My Art Beat", and it feels good!!

The Plans of Mice and Men...

Just when I had a plan to migrate my blogging to my website, a MAJOR CATASTROPHE occurred. As a result I have no website. It should start reappearing page by page in the next day or so.

Return of the Red Ribbon

This is the newest. It is called "Determination".

I seem to be gravitating toward the dark palette as opposed to the more natural flesh tones. Seems more dramatic to me. Any thoughts??

Cezanne Study

I love the impressionists, especially Paul Cezanne. Until lately, I was not aware of the many watercolor pieces he did and I particularly like his still-life pieces. I think he may have done them more as studies for subsequent paintings because when you look at them closely, you can really see the pencil lines. Every so often I get the urge to copy one of his works.

A resolution that I am looking forward to keeping!

I mentioned in my last post that I only have watercolors with me while we are camping out in hotel for a few weeks between moves from old house to new. I work mostly with Oils and Acrylics. Watercolor is a challenge for me. So my resolve is to do at least one watercolor piece a week for the first quarter of the year (even after I move back into a home studio).

The second quarter, I am thinking of doing figurative work in oil with only a three color palette. Payne's grey, prussian blue and yellow ochre.

I am excited about seeing what can be accomplished with limiting resources

we are snuggled into our studio apartment, waiting for New Home Construction to be completed. Not much room for easel, canvases, etc. so I have my sketch pad with me and some watercolors. That narrows the focus down a bit. However, I am finding it's not a bad thing, inasmuch as I have a hard time staying on track anyway.

A friend suggested that, instead of painting skeletons, I might try painting a clown (one of his favorite subjects). Thought I would share the results. (thanks for the idea, Bob)

These are the other pieces in the "Red Ribbon" series (so far). All paintings are on 20 x 16 inch gallery wrap canvas with sides painted. Framing not necessary, however, they look great in black "Illusion" floater frames. If you look carefully at these and the first one ("Beginning") on an earlier post, you will find that all four paintings can be placed to allow the red ribbon to flow from one to the other.

I have been working hard to create a website "from scratch". I had the hardest time trying to work with website delopment software and finally decided to do the whole thing in html code. This has been an all consuming project but finally got lift off on Oct 1. Of course, that was only the beginning. Some of you had some really helpful suggestions, but that only meant "back to the drawing board". So last night I uploaded the changes to the server and hope you will visit and comment. I'm not really a portrait artist but, sometimes I see a face and just have to paint it. This was one of them. He is an artist with an online gallery and his photo was in black and white. I really was fascinated with the lighting as well as the face.

Summer time in Phoenix is my most productive season at the easel. I have been wanting to do more figurative work and am playing with the idea and some sketches for a couple of series:

Acrylic or Oil (haven't decided yet which medium) for a collection of Nudes with red ribbons.
The other series will be Watercolors of nude on, off or near a Green Chair. This is the first piece.

When I was asked to paint two pieces for a "Dia de los Muertos" (Day of the Dead) exhibit, I declined at first. It had never occurred to me to paint skeletons.....and I didn’t know a lot about of the event.

"Dia de los Muertos" is a very festive celebration in Mexico where families honor their departed members. I finally decided to paint them. Both sold during the exhibit and I earned commissions to do several more.

In the past two years, I have done almost 30 of these paintings : "skeletons celebrating life". I don't portray them in the traditional style....mine seem to take on a life of their own.

When I see people having a good time I usually visualize my whimsical friends searching for a canvas where they can join in the fun....and I enjoy making it happen.

The Dragons have arrived!

Long, long ago the Phoenix Dragon and the Jade Dragon were guardians of a magnificent pearl. One day the Empress of the Sky decided she must have that pearl so she sent her soldiers to steal it from the dragons. When the dragons attempted to retrieve it, they accidently dropped the pearl.

As it landed on earth, the pearl was transformed in to a beautiful lake which is now known as West Lake, in Hangzhou, China. The faithful dragons turned themselves into two mountains placed at each end of the lake and to this day they can be seen guarding their precious “pearl” of a lake.

I was asked to paint two pieces for a "Dia de los Muertos" (Day of the Dead) event. This is a very festive Mexican Traditional Holiday celebrating their departed ancestors.

The pieces sold immediately so I painted more. In the past two years ago I have done almost 30 paintings, some were commissioned pieces that represent a family setting. (Unusual family portraits!!)

When I see people having a good time I translate the fun into one of my skeletons celebrating life.

I sometimes think these figures have just been waiting for me to bring them back.
