Does It Make a Sound?

I'm sure you've heard the rhetorical question, "if a tree falls in the forest and there is nobody to hear it, does it make a sound?  In my mind I have always been compelled to answer "yes".  What I could never could figure out is why anybody would ask.
Still, I wonder if a painting is "art" if nobody ever looks at it? (except for the artist, of course)  Anyway, I'm not sure I could answer "yes" to that question.  A finished canvas is the result of some dialog within the artist, but not the last word.  The artist is reaching out, saying something, and needs a response from the viewer.  As an artist, this is alway exciting for me to learn what the viewer sees and feels; and more often than not, I find them seeing things that I didn't realize were there.
Collecting art can be such a fulfilling quest.  You just have to stroll through galleries and art fairs to see the intensity of prospective collectors as they consider what they want to…
